The real meaning behind Cinco de Mayo may have become as lost as Jimmy Buffett’s shaker of salt, but for many of us it’s a day to eat Mexican food and drink a few too many margaritas.
Whether you’re looking for mariachi bands, an endless supply of tequila, crazy wrestling or a more authentic experience, here are some fiestas going down on the fifth.
Cinco de Mayo Celebrate Culture Festival
Location: Civic Center Park, Denver
When: May 5-6, 10 a.m.-8 p.m.
Cost: Free to attend
Unique events at this annual festival include a taco eating contest, the super-adorable chihuahua race and the green chile bowl cook-off.
Stoney’s Derby de Mayo
Location: Stoney’s Bar and Grill, 1111 Lincoln St., Denver
When: May 5, 1-11:30 p.m.
There will be crawfish and sombreros and Coronas. You know; just another Saturday afternoon.
Location: Social Fare inside the JW Marriott Denver Cherry Creek, 150 Clayton Lane, Denver
When: May 5, 2-6 p.m.
With Cinco de Mayo and the Kentucky Derby falling on the same day this year, Social Fare gives you the best of both worlds: tequila juleps and whiskey margaritas.
Cinco de Mayo Celebration
Location: Outlets at Castle Rock
When: May 5-6
If you like your cinco with a side of shopping, you’re in luck! The Outlets at Castle Rock will have dance performances, a roving mariachi band and Mexican bites from Tacos with Altitude and Lante Brau-Casa food trucks.
Cinco de Drinko
Location: Lime, An American Cantina & Tequila Bar, 500 16th St., Denver
When: May 5, 11 a.m.-all night
Tequila samplings and mariachi bands: It’s what Cinco de Mayo dreams are made of.

Picnic of the Pig
Location: Lola Coastal Mexican, 1575 Boulder St., Denver
When: May 5, 12-8 p.m.
The 10th annual street party will provide everything you need for Cinco, if everything you need is Luchador wrestling and face painting.
Location: Zeppelin Station patio, 3501 Wazee St., Denver
When: May 5, 1-4 p.m.
BBQ, tacos, bluegrass, derby and drinks and a sombrero contest — these were all Julie Andrews’ favorite things, right?
Cinco de Mayo Celebration with Tasty Grooves
Location: Bonacquisti Wine, 4640 Pecos St., Unit 1, Denver
When: May 4, 6:30-9:30 p.m.
Technically, this is a cuatro de mayo event, but whatever. There’s wine and Latin soul jams by the Tasty Grooves.
Cinco de Mayo Party
Location: Howl at the Moon Denver, 1735 19th St.
When: May 5, 7 p.m.-2 a.m.
Blue margarita buckets are to be had and festive décor is to be seen at Howl at the Moon’s fiesta.

When: May 5, begins at 10:30 a.m.
Start the day right with a $39 bottomless margarita brunch, then continue the party on the terrace with DJ Amen beginning at 6 p.m.
